Nice to meet ya !

My name is Ireland and I'm an 11 month old, blue-eyed, white and grey Siberian Husky.

The picture on the right is taken during my stay at the Animal Friends Humane Society, where I was brought in as a stray. Because they were unable to track down my owner, I was put up for adoption. Several people were interested in adopting me because of my charming appearance but also because I was already house-trained and can sit on command. I'm not much of a barker, although I will howl when I'm bored or anxious.

After having spend two weeks at the shelter, I was finally taken home by my new owners, Katrien and Brad, but not before I was spayed and microchipped.

I like:
- belly scratches
- my soft, green toy dog.
- my Nylabone
- car rides
- playing with other dogs at the dogpark.
- taking naps under the desk.
- long walks
- eating icecubes

I dislike:
- small dogs and rodents
- being by myself
- escalators

Hi Ireland,
It's great to see another Irish husky. My name is derived from the Irish word for wolf. My son, Amarok, isn't a fan of small dogs either, or maybe it's that he likes small dogs TOO much. When walking on some local trails, Amarok and my mum came across a group of 10 little white dogs, all scampering about - it really was too much for any husky to take!!

(P.S Just in case you were wondering, no small white dogs were harmed. Amarok actually behaved very well and only yipped a bit and begged mum to let him 'play'. Mum didn't fall for it and they kept on with their walk.)

We're still unsure how inately aggressive Ireland can be toward other dogs. She's certainly barred her teeth and seemed ferocious a couple of times when around smaller dogs -- definitely didn't seem in a "playful" mood. We're probably going to take her to some obedience/socialization courses, to be sure.

I almost had some Beagle lunch here twice... My humans got so afraid about the way I usually approach Luma, that they thought it would be better to separate us. They are looking for an obedience thing to take me... But many people and some vets don't believe that Luma and I can really be friends one day. Luma is small, but a quite moody dog... and I am just sweet with other dogs when I am away from home. I am a quite territorialist dog, indeed.

Sadly, huskies are not renowned for being great with small dogs. Even I have been known to consider a little nimble ever once and a while. Obedience lessons are a great idea. When I took obedience lessons, one of the other dogs was a tea cup Chihuahua (although it looked more like a squirrel to me!). Mum always tried to make sure we were far apart, but we always seemed to end up next to each other. Once I had to do a long downed stay right next to the Chihuahua. Poor Mum was sweating the whole time, but I amazed even myself and barely paid any attention to the squealing little squirrel-like critter!!

It may also help if you figured out if Ireland is an alpha/dominant (like me) or aggressive out of fear (Amarok), which would help you learn what kinds of dogs she doesn’t like. Amarok is really quite a coward so feels the need to bluster and act macho to cover up for it. So while I will take offence to any dog who doesn’t automatically bow down to my obvious supremacy, Amarok prefers to pick fights with dogs who are noticeably smaller than him (a fight he figures he could win). Stick with it, we huskies can be a real pain, but being so beautiful and sweet, we make it worth it!! ;)
